ASIC’s latest scrutiny of insurance in superannuation communications is a timely reminder that life cover is only valuable when people understand when it applies, what it pays, and where the gaps may sit.
For employers, CFOs and HR leaders, this is not just a superannuation fund issue.
It goes directly to workforce wellbeing, benefit design and the way organisations explain financial protection to their people.

The regulator’s concern centres on whether members receive clear, timely and useful information about insurance arrangements connected to their super. That includes how cover starts, when it may stop, what exclusions or limits can apply, and how workers should respond if their employment, health or income changes. In practice, many employees assume they are adequately protected because they see insurance listed on a statement, without checking whether the benefit amount, occupation definition or eligibility settings remain suitable.

This development extends earlier industry calls for simpler guidance around life insurance held through super. The message for employers is clear: default cover can play an important role, but it should not be treated as a complete protection strategy for every employee, executive or key person. Group arrangements, company-paid benefits and business-owned cover can all serve different purposes, and confusion between them can create disappointment at claim time.

For businesses using insurance as part of an employee benefits package, communication should be treated as part of the benefit itself. A policy may be competitively priced and well structured, but if employees do not know how to nominate beneficiaries, how salary continuance interacts with sick leave, or whether cover follows them after leaving the business, the perceived value is reduced. Poor understanding can also undermine trust if a claim is declined because a condition, waiting period or cessation rule was never properly understood.

Boards and senior management should use this regulatory attention as a practical review point. Useful questions include whether onboarding materials explain insurance in plain English, whether annual benefit statements are supported by accessible education, and whether staff know where to seek help before a health event occurs. For business owners, the same discipline should apply to key person and buy-sell planning, where assumptions about who is covered and for how much can quickly become business-critical.

The broader lesson is that corporate life insurance options should be reviewed through both a technical and human lens. Premiums, definitions and sums insured matter, but so does clarity. Employers that make protection easier to understand are better placed to strengthen employee confidence, reduce surprises at claim time and demonstrate that financial security is a genuine part of their people strategy.
