Why cutting life cover needs more than a quick budget decision

Affordability matters, but so does keeping protection aligned with real household risk

Recent industry reporting on household insurance affordability has put the spotlight back on a growing risk for New Zealand families: underinsurance.
As mortgage costs, food bills and other living expenses remain front of mind, some households are reassessing personal insurance and looking for ways to reduce monthly outgoings.
That is understandable, but life cover is one area where a quick cut can create a long-term problem.

For life insurance customers, the issue is not simply whether a premium feels expensive today. The bigger question is whether the policy would still do the job if the insured person died or became terminally ill. Underinsurance is often invisible until a claim is needed, when the gap between the benefit amount and the family’s actual financial needs becomes painfully clear.

A useful review starts with the basics. Households should consider the mortgage or rent commitment, other debts, funeral costs, children’s education, ongoing living costs and the income dependants would lose. Self-employed people may also need to think about business debts, key person risk and the lack of employer benefits that some salaried workers receive.

Before reducing a sum insured, it can help to estimate the level of cover needed under current circumstances. A family that arranged cover several years ago may find the original amount is now too low because of a larger mortgage or higher living costs. Others may find they are paying for more cover than they realistically need, particularly if debt has fallen or children are now financially independent.

If premiums are becoming difficult to manage, cancellation is not the only option. Policyholders may be able to adjust the sum insured, remove optional benefits, review stepped versus level premium structures, change payment frequency or compare alternative policy designs. However, replacing or reducing cover should be approached carefully, because new underwriting may apply and past health changes can affect terms, exclusions or pricing.

This is where a licensed adviser can add value. Advice should not be about selling the biggest policy; it should explain trade-offs clearly, including what is gained, what is lost and how changes may affect future claims. Consumers should ask which insurers are being considered, how the adviser is paid and what assumptions sit behind any recommendation.

The practical takeaway is balanced: affordability matters, but so does protection. A well-structured policy should fit the household budget while still providing meaningful financial support when it is needed most. In a tighter economy, reviewing life insurance is sensible. Cutting it without checking the consequences is where the real risk begins.

Recent fleet and transport industry coverage has again highlighted faster movement toward battery-electric and lower-emissions heavy vehicles in Australia, with truck makers, councils, logistics operators and specialist fleets moving beyond short demonstration runs. For truck operators, the insurance question is not simply whether electric trucks are better or worse than diesel. Why Repair Bottlenecks Matter for Farm Insurance Claims

Fresh industry concern about repair delays after severe weather is highly relevant for Australian farms, where a damaged shed, washed-out access track or unavailable part can quickly interrupt day-to-day operations. While the wider insurance discussion often focuses on homes and commercial buildings, the same pressure points can be even more complex on rural properties because assets are spread out, specialist equipment is involved and local contractor availability may be limited. - read more
