Why Beauty Businesses Should Recheck Their Insurance Now

Rising costs and informal risk planning can leave salons exposed at claim time

Fresh SME insurance reporting has put underinsurance back in the spotlight, with new national survey data indicating that many Australian small businesses are still not reviewing their cover as carefully as their risks are changing.
For beauty salon owners, sole traders and mobile beauticians, the message is practical rather than alarming: a policy that suited the business a few years ago may no longer match today’s equipment values, treatment mix, stock levels or operating costs.

The latest coverage of the Vero SME Insurance Index points to a persistent gap between what small businesses own, earn and need to protect, and what their insurance schedules may actually reflect. The 2026 index found many small businesses still manage risk on an informal basis, while a significant share have also faced revenue pressure over the past year. That combination can be difficult for beauty operators, because cost control often competes with the need to maintain adequate protection.

In a salon environment, underinsurance can show up in several ways. A contents sum insured may not reflect the replacement cost of treatment beds, cosmetic stock, reception technology, laundry equipment or specialised devices. A business interruption limit may not account for rent, wages, lost bookings and the time needed to refit a treatment room after an insured event. For mobile beauticians, the risk profile can shift as client locations, travel patterns and portable equipment values change.

Liability cover also deserves attention. Beauty therapists work in close contact with clients and may provide services involving skin, eyes, nails, waxing, tanning, massage or cosmetic products. If the services offered have expanded, or if higher-risk treatments have been added, the original assumptions behind public liability insurance for beauticians and professional indemnity insurance for beauticians may need to be revisited.

A sensible annual review does not need to be complicated. Beauty business owners can start by checking:

  • whether equipment, fit-out and stock values reflect current replacement costs;
  • whether turnover, staffing and treatment menus have changed since the last renewal;
  • whether business interruption cover allows enough time for repairs, restocking and reopening;
  • whether mobile work, home-based services or pop-up events are clearly disclosed;
  • whether exclusions, excesses and limits still suit the way the business operates.

The key lesson is that renewal should not be treated as an automatic admin task. It is an opportunity to compare the policy against the real business sitting behind it. If there is uncertainty, getting professional assistance may help identify gaps before they become expensive problems.

For beauticians already juggling supplier costs, rent, wages and client demand, insurance adequacy can feel like one more pressure. However, taking time to review sums insured, liability settings and interruption cover can support more confident decision-making when finding suitable cover for a changing beauty business.
