New claims data puts insurer performance back in focus

The latest APRA and ASIC update gives policyholders another reason to look beyond premiums alone

New claims data puts insurer performance back in focus?w=400

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

Fresh life insurance claims and disputes data from APRA and ASIC is a timely reminder that the value of cover is measured not only by the premium paid, but by how a policy performs when a family, business partner or estate needs it most.
The latest release covers the rolling 12 months from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026 and feeds into ASIC’s MoneySmart comparison tool, giving consumers a clearer view of claims acceptance, claim timeframes, disputes and cancellation rates across Australian life insurers.

The update is particularly relevant for Australians who use life, total and permanent disability, trauma or income protection cover as part of business continuity planning. In a partnership setting, a delayed or disputed claim can affect more than household finances. It may influence how quickly ownership interests are transferred, whether debts can be managed, and how confidently the remaining partner can stabilise operations.

For readers considering partnership life insurance, the practical message is that claims data should sit alongside price, definitions and ownership structure. A lower premium may be attractive, especially while business costs remain under pressure, but it should not be assessed in isolation. Policy definitions, exclusions, waiting periods, disclosure obligations and the channel through which cover is arranged can all influence claim outcomes.

The MoneySmart tool also highlights an important limitation: average claim times reflect the period taken by insurers to accept or decline a claim, and may not include other administration steps, such as processing by a superannuation trustee. That distinction matters for people relying on insurance held through super, where the path from claim lodgement to money reaching beneficiaries can involve more than one decision-maker.

Business partners reviewing cover may wish to consider:

  • whether the insured amounts still reflect current business value, liabilities and succession arrangements;
  • whether TPD, trauma and income protection definitions match the roles each partner actually performs;
  • whether buy-sell agreements, policy ownership and beneficiaries are aligned;
  • whether claim evidence, medical history and financial records would be accessible if a claim arose;
  • whether recent claims and disputes data raises questions to discuss with a licensed adviser or insurer.

Tools can assist with early planning, but they cannot replace policy wording or personal advice. A calculator may help partners test broad assumptions about cover amounts, while the latest APRA and ASIC data can help frame better questions about insurer performance. The strongest approach is usually a documented review that considers both affordability today and reliability at claim time.
