Fresh regulatory attention on insurance pricing practices is a timely reminder for Australian tradies to look past the headline premium and check whether the policy they are paying for still matches what was promised.
ASIC has again put insurers on notice over the need for fair, accurate and well-controlled pricing systems, particularly where customers are told they will receive discounts, loyalty benefits or other premium adjustments.

For sole traders and small trade businesses, the issue is practical rather than technical. Many policies renew automatically, and busy operators may only glance at the price before paying. But pricing errors can sit inside complex systems, including automated rating tools, legacy technology, discount rules and data quality problems. If those systems do not work as intended, a customer may pay more than expected, miss out on a promised benefit or misunderstand what has changed since last year.

This matters because tradies often carry several types of cover at once: public liability, tools and portable equipment, commercial motor, contract works, personal accident or income protection, and sometimes cyber or business interruption cover. A small increase across multiple policies can add up quickly, especially when materials, fuel and labour costs are already stretching cash flow. As we have noted in earlier coverage of renewal notices, the way information is presented can strongly influence whether a business owner reviews, compares or simply rolls over their cover.

The key lesson is not to assume that last year’s policy remains the best fit. Before renewal, tradies should check:

  • whether any discount, no-claim benefit or loyalty adjustment has been applied as expected;
  • whether sums insured still reflect today’s replacement costs for tools, vehicles, plant and stock;
  • whether liability limits still meet contract, landlord or principal contractor requirements;
  • whether excesses, exclusions, sub-limits or business descriptions have changed;
  • whether new work types, staff, subcontractors or higher-value projects need to be declared.

Pricing scrutiny also highlights the value of keeping your own records. Save renewal documents, policy schedules, certificates of currency, emails and any promotional material that influenced your decision. If a premium looks wrong or a promised benefit appears missing, ask for an explanation in writing before you renew.

For tradies juggling jobs and admin, the best approach is a short annual insurance check-up rather than a rushed payment at the last minute. Reviewing your risk profile, asking questions early and comparing cover options can help reduce surprises and keep protection aligned with the way your business actually operates.
