Why insurer resilience rules matter for allied health practices

A prudential standard aimed at insurers still carries practical lessons for clinic owners

Why insurer resilience rules matter for allied health practices?w=400

APRA's operational risk management standard, CPS 230, is now part of the rulebook for insurers, banks and superannuation trustees.
Although most allied health clinics are not directly captured by the prudential standard, its direction of travel is highly relevant: regulators expect financial institutions to understand critical operations, manage service providers and recover from disruption without unacceptable harm to customers.

For allied health practice owners, the insurance message is not simply that insurers have another compliance obligation. It is that operational resilience is becoming a more visible part of how risk is assessed, priced and managed. A clinic that depends on cloud records, outsourced reception, online bookings, digital payments, diagnostic equipment, practice management software or a small group of key clinicians has its own version of the same problem: if one important link fails, patient care, revenue and evidence trails can be affected quickly.

This matters when arranging or renewing cover because a loss is rarely limited to the first incident. A cyber event may also create privacy notification costs, cancelled appointments, reputational damage and questions about whether appropriate safeguards were in place. A premises interruption may affect leased equipment, cold storage, patient files and subcontractor income. A clinical complaint may become harder to defend if records are incomplete after a system outage.

Useful review questions include:

  • Does the current policy reflect how services are actually delivered, including telehealth, mobile visits, group programs and contractor work?
  • Are business interruption settings realistic for the time it would take to restore rooms, equipment, systems and bookings?
  • Are cyber, privacy, professional indemnity and public liability sections aligned, or are there gaps between them?
  • Do contracts with software providers, landlords, referrers and subcontractors create insurance obligations that have not been matched by the policy?
  • Is there a clear incident plan showing who contacts the insurer, who preserves records and who communicates with patients?

AHPRA-registered practitioners should also connect resilience planning with their professional indemnity arrangements. Appropriate cover is not just about holding a certificate at renewal time; it should match the practitioner's scope, work settings, supervision responsibilities and record-keeping reality.

The practical takeaway is to treat insurer resilience news as a prompt for your own risk review. If the practice has grown, changed software, added contractors or expanded into new service models, it may be time to estimate appropriate cover levels before the next renewal. Strong insurance outcomes usually depend on both suitable policy wording and the operational discipline to show what happened, when it happened and how the clinic responded.
