Why rising medical costs can still leave your pay exposed

Treatment bills are only one part of the financial risk when illness interrupts work

Recent insurance industry reporting has again highlighted the pressure that medical inflation and rising health-related claims are placing on New Zealand households.
For many workers, the immediate concern is understandable: if treatment becomes more expensive, will health insurance be enough to keep the family financially steady?

The answer depends on which problem the policy is designed to solve. Health insurance can help with eligible treatment costs, specialist appointments, surgery and diagnostics, depending on the policy. That can be hugely valuable when public waiting times are long or when quicker access to care may support recovery. But it does not automatically replace wages, contracting income or business drawings if illness keeps someone away from work.

That distinction matters because many of the biggest household costs continue whether a person is well enough to earn or not. Mortgage or rent payments, groceries, utilities, insurance premiums, childcare, transport and debt repayments do not pause during recovery. A health policy may help fund care, while income insurance is aimed at helping replace part of lost earnings after an eligible illness or injury.

For employees with sick leave, the first few days or weeks may feel manageable. The risk grows when recovery takes longer, treatment is staged over time, or fatigue and reduced capacity make a full return to work difficult. For self-employed people and contractors, the gap can appear even sooner because paid leave may be limited or non-existent, and proof of income can be more complex at claim time.

This is why a cover review should look beyond the question of whether one policy is “better” than another. The more useful question is how different forms of protection work together. A household may need to consider:

  • whether emergency savings could cover several months of essential costs;
  • how long employer sick leave or business cash flow would last;
  • what waiting period would be affordable before benefits begin;
  • whether the monthly benefit is aligned with real household commitments;
  • how exclusions, offsets and policy definitions could affect a claim.

Rising medical costs are therefore not just a health insurance story. They are a reminder that illness can create two pressures at once: the cost of getting well and the loss of income while doing so. New Zealanders who have not reviewed their protection for several years may find their income, debt levels, family responsibilities and living costs have changed significantly.

For anyone relying on regular earnings, now is a sensible time to compare income insurance options, check whether existing cover still matches current needs, and consider speaking with an adviser before making changes. The goal is not to over-insure, but to make sure one financial setback does not become several.
